Department of Botany & Environment Studies Department Highlights
  • Since the initiation of the department, various educational trips have been organized for familiarizing the students with different plant species in their natural environment and teaching different techniques and processes used in the research labs of various institutes and universities. 
    • A one day trip was organized to visit Botanical garden and museum of Botany department in Punjab University, Chandigarh during the session 2014-15 to teach the students about the preparation and maintenance of botanical samples in herbarium and museum.
    • A two day trip exclusively for M.Sc. students was organized to CSSRI, Karnal during second semester 2014-15 to teach the students about degraded soils and different techniques used for replenishing the degraded soils.
    • A two-day trip was organized to IHBT, Palampur Cooperative Tea Factory and HPKV, Palampur, Himachal Pradesh during first semester 2015-16.
    • Other trips include visit to Harike Wetlands during second semester 2015-16 and 2016-17; visit to G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology and Jim Corbett National Park during first semester 2016-17 and second semester 2017-18.

 

  • Students of the department have initiated a club named “KADAMB”. The focus of the club is to develop and maintain botanical garden, conduct various events and maintain museum of the department. Different events conducted under the aegis of KADAMB include
    • Celebration of International Women’s Day
    • Celebration of Darwin’s Day
    • Celebration of science day and conduct of science fest
    • Organization of different departmental events like fresher welcome and farewell
    • Organization of plantation drives in the university
    • Members of the club sensitized the students about “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” schemes and about different hardships faced by the female members of our society through plays and Nukkad Nataks.
  • The Department has conducted workshops and expert lectures on topics like mushroom cultivation, maintenance of plant samples, importance of clean energy sources, etc.
  • The Department maintains a Herbal garden with more than 100 live plant species of medicinal, aesthetic, economic and rare plants mostly for educational purposes.
  • Department has also initiated a museum having a collection of more than 300 species in herbarium, some 100 preserved samples and almost 100 seed samples.
  • Department has also initiated a botanical garden in the university premises which is mainly concerned with the preservation of plants and education of the students of university.
  • The students have excelled in academics and cleared exams like GATE, different entrance examinations and received fellowships.
