Learning to live in the present can transform life

IQAC in collaboration with Psychology department conducted a two day Internationalconference on Mental health and well-being.
Learning to live in the present through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has the potential of transforming life. Behavioral therapy works by changing people’s attitude and their behavior by focusing on the thoughts, images and perception. This was disclosed by Dr. Hina Chatha who held a workshop on mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques at International Workshop and Conference on Mental Well Being organized at DAV University. The conference was jointly organized by the departments of Psychology and Education at the University. More than two hundred academicians, working professionals, research scholars and post graduate students from various universities and institutions, across the country participated in the conference. They presented more than 70 research papers in the conference.

During the workshop, Dr Hina Chatha, who is qualified in Canada in CBT, elaborated the techniques of mindfulness by making distinction between meditation and mindfulness and by involving participants in open discussion through various interactive activities. She resorted to different techniques including story-telling and aroma therapy for treating behavioural problems psychologically. Dr Chatha emphasized the role of various breathing exercises to grapple with psychological problems like trauma, judgmental and non-judgmental stress, depression, and anxiety. She said that that mindfulness could be termed as a state where the mind was fully attending to what’s happening in the vicinity. She said that cognitive behavioral therapy ranged between five to ten months for most emotional problems.

The session of the conference on the second day was inaugurated by the chief guest Dr Rashmi Vij, Principal, Police DAV Public School Jalandhar. Acknowledging the efforts of the university for making people aware about psychological therapy, Dr Rashmi asserted that there should be proper training to all for inculcating positive thoughts and to ward off unnecessary worries.
Vice-Chancellor of the University Professor Rakesh Kumar Mahajan said that the University would ensure that all students get benefit of applied and clinical psychology. Dr. Jasbir Rishi, (DSW) the convener of the conference said that psychology had the potential or reforming and propelling life ahead.
