A guest lecture on “Taxation system in India” was organized for the final year undergraduate and postgraduate students of the department of Commerce, Business Management and Economics (CBME) on 8-10-2021. Dr. Rajiv Puri, Associate Professor, DAV College, Jalandhar was the resource person for the session. Mr. Sidhartha Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of CBME welcomed the resource person.
Dr. Rajiv Puri explained the tax structure that constituted direct (income tax) and indirect taxes (Goods and service tax -GST). He elaborated upon the application and benefits of GST. He highlighted differences between the previous and new tax systems of India. Suggestions with reference to direct tax were also proposed by him. He stressed upon more use of direct tax as compared to indirect tax.
He compared the tax system of different countries and highlighted the various measures which other countries were adopting. He quoted the words of Albert Einstein “… complicated income tax is the hardest thing in the world to understand….” through which he explained the complexity of Indian income tax structure. It was a very interactive session which was supported by practical examples given by the resource person. Mr. Sidhartha Sharma and Dr. Girish Taneja, HoD, CBME Department jointly thanked the resource person for educating the students about the new changes in the taxation system of India. Dr. Sandeep Vij, Associate Professor, CBME Department and other faculty members were also present in the session.
